Workshop on Structure Formation in Standard Cosmology

"December 19-23, 2016"

Department of Mathematics

BITS-Pilani, Hyderabad Campus

Department of Mathematics, BITS-Pilani, Hyderabad Campus is pleased to announce a 5 days workshop on structure formation in standard cosmology in association with IUCAA-Pune during December 19-23, 2016.

The study of cosmological structure formation is seeing unprecedented advances in the quality and quantity of data becoming available from various experiments and large surveys. Several theories of structure formation have been proposed and are being tested to increasing precision. Bunch of new experiments are mapping the sky in all wavelengths giving us an unprecedented clear view of universe at early epochs on the largest visible scales. We also have huge amount of data from surveys of the large scale galaxy distribution and the velocity field, of galaxies, quasars and Lyman alpha clouds at high redshift, and of the mass distribution from gravitational lensing. At the same time there are scientific groups running very large N-body simulations to understand the process of structure formation at all the scales.

The goal of the workshop will be to identify the candidates from various universities at the early stage of their research career and introduce them to the field of structure formation and the different ways in which one can contribute to the field i.e. theoretical modelling, data analysis or simulations. The first half of the lectures will brush up the knowledge of standard cosmology and also introduce the participants to the basics of structure formation. Second half of the workshop will focus on understanding the data we gather from various surveys, connecting it with the theoretical models of structure formation and also analyzing this data. Prior to this hands-on session on this data-analysis, participants will be given a primer on various statistical techniques one needs. If time permits, we would like to introduce them to the basic idea of N-body simulation. We hope that by the end of this workshop, the participants have enough curiosity, motivation and initial knowledge that they go back and work towards making a career in the field.
